As part of the initial funding bid, the funds were made available to offer coaching to members. Rather than pay a coach and only benefit from a handful of sessions, it was decided to train one of our members who could then step up as the resident club coach.

With not long left of our funding project we still have one outstanding area to cover - Coaching. We put this in the bid and our experience taught us this would be important to making the club appeal to new players wanting to learn and develop in the sport.

The cost of a fully qualified coach isn't cheap. The money we have would only cover the cost of a coach for a handful of sessions and wouldn't really see any long term benefit.

By this time numbers were inconsistent on a Thursday evening. Will took the decision to offer players informal coaching on Thursday nights to improve their techniques and all round game play. This worked and numbers on a Thursday have increased dramatically.

As it was a large expense we opened up the subject to club players. The majority decision followed the idea of sending one of our own players on Badminton England's Level 1 Coaching course, after completing Level 2, with insurance, officially means you can coach formally.  A handful of names were suggested, as Will had already taken the role upon himself to offer his experience, the players agreed he would best suit the opportunity.

We also offered the opportunity for a club player to undertake a First Aid course provided by British Red Cross funded by SSBC.

Allan, SSBC treasurer said: "The whole group are delighted to keep the money local, having a qualified coach within the club offers so many options in the future to benefit all our players in the long term.  "Will has only missed one session since the club started last year, this, along with the offer of the first aid training to club players, is just the beginning of SSBC offering opportunities to its loyal players for the benefit of the club, like our offer of a free Adidas wristband to players after attending five of our sessions."

Speak to a member of the SSBC committee if you are interested in attending the First Aid workshop.
